How Do I Protect My Skin From the West Virginia Winter?

We hear it all the time: your skin was looking great through the fall, then—poof—one wintry day came through and now everything is looking dull, dry, and cracked! Winter is no joke for our skin, but there are plenty of ways to keep it healthy and glowing through all months. That’s why we put together this rundown on ways to protect your skin in our chilly West Virginia winters:

Stay hydrated!

You might be surprised to know that drinking water has major skin benefits in the winter. Without us noticing, dry air outside – and dry heat inside – are both pulling water out of our skin at all times during the winter.

We’re so used to applying things on top of our skin for skincare, it might seem hard to believe that drinking water will really make a difference in our appearance. The easiest way to think about this is when someone comes in after a long time spent in the cold wind, or when someone wakes up after drinking alcohol and is dehydrated: don’t they look, well, not great?

It’s not your imagination—drying out our bodies makes our skin look paler, more wrinkled, and more sagging. In addition to drinking more water, our IV Therapy is perfect for reversing dehydration and giving your skin an extra glow. Consider our Quench or Reboot mixtures for optimal skin benefits.

Moisturizer, moisturizer, moisturizer

This one seems obvious, but not using enough moisturizer is actually the most common mistake. Your daily moisturizer is working overtime in winter. Be sure to apply it every morning and evening, and if you’re spending a lot of time outside, consider trying out an intense moisturizing cream during these cold months.

Sunscreen is still a must

Did you know that up to 80% of UV rays can still cause skin damage on completely overcast days? Even on the darkest, coldest day, it’s important to apply an SPF of at least 30 to your skin each morning. This is important for avoiding dark spots, wrinkles, and other signs of sun damage.

And if you’re noticing some of those UV damage spots and wrinkles: you’re not alone. That’s why we offer a next generation Fractora laser treatment. Within just a few treatments you’ll be seeing clearer, smoother, more even skin.

Avoid hot water

We all know how great it feels to hop into a hot shower after a cold day, but your skin will thank you if you turn down the temperature to a neutral warm temperature. Especially when washing your face, make sure the water is no hotter than what you’d consider ‘bath water’—or just a bit warmer than comfortable room temperature.
